May 27 2011

This week the Young Child Rights Advocates have arrived in the Netherlands. The project, also called Young Child Rights Advocates, is initiated by the organizations IREWOC and ICDI, and is supported by KidsRights. The International Children’s Peace Prize winner of 2007, Thandiwe Chama, is one of the Advocates.

The Young Child Rights Advocates are seven very special Young people (18-26) from Peru, Palestine, Pakistan, Guatemala, Zambia, Ethiopia and Liberia, who have created projects to improve the legal position of children and young adults in their own countries. Their areas of focus are, among others, giving non-formal education to street children, organizing advocacy campaigns at schools on hiv/aids and fighting other forms of violence against children. To set up these projects they are given €2500, which is mdae possible through funding of the Dutch Ministry of VWS (which used to be Youth and Family) and the Utopa Foundation.

On Friday May 27th 2011 the Young Child Rights Advocates will present their projects and symbolically receive the money for their funding.

Why is this project so special to KidsRights?

The winner of the International Children’s Peace Prize 2007, Thandiwe Chama from Zambia, and one of the nominees for the International Children’s Peace Prize 2010, Getahun from Ethiopia, participate in this special initiative. KidsRights is very proud that they have been selected to participate out of the many applicants.

KidsRights wishes them, and all the other Advocates, a lot of success in setting up their projects!
